We all love Candles at Christmastime. It is a time honored tradition. Step inside any Christmas shop and you will see a beautiful array of colored candles.
The History of the Christmas candle can be dated as far back as the middle ages where it was used to represent the star of Bethlehem. They can also be linked to the festival of the Romans (Saturnalia festival). Candles were regarded to be symbolic of the light of Saturn (an angel of God). With Christianity, a large candle would be lit on Christmas Eve, symbolizing Christ, the light of the world. They are also used during Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of light, during the eight nights of Hanukkah, a candle is lit in a special menorah. During Kwanzaa, a special candle holder called a kinara is used that holds seven candles.
And of course, some of you I’m sure can remember, they were used to decorate Christmas trees. A practice that fell out of popularity after the invention of the modern electric lights.
